Returning super coach Wayne Bennett has been dealt another hammer blow, with South Sydney confirming star fullback Latrell Mitchell will be out for eight weeks after a hamstring injury sustained on a chaotic Wednesday at training.
Mitchell and captain Cameron Murray went down injured within minutes of each other at the club’s Heffron Park base, with the latter likely to miss at least five months after rupturing his Achilles.
Souths’ No.1 will miss the opening two months of the 2025 season, adding to the injuries of Alex Johnston and Campbell Graham already hampering Bennett’s side as they aim for a return to the top eight after a disappointing 2024 campaign where they finished above only Wests Tigers in 16th with a 7-17 record.
“We will start a rehabilitation process (with Mitchell). Hopefully we can get him back on the field sooner rather than later. It’s a setback but it happens in professional sport,” Souths CEO Blake Solly said.
“Latrell was desperate to get on the field so there is nothing more disappointing but there is a next man-up attitude here at the club.”
Jye Gray, who showed flashes of his ability in Saturday’s trial loss against Manly, will likely slot in at fullback while Mitchell is out of action.
