Kevin Durant is expected to leave the Phoenix Suns in the summer. The future Hall of Famer was reportedly shopped by Phoenix’s front office heading into the Feb. 6 trade deadline.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Durant is aware that he will be traded at the end of the current season.
“They’re gonna trade him and he knows that,” Windhorst said. “…There have been a couple of opportunities where he could have criticized them for trying to trade him. He has not done that, he has been very professional throughout all that…I think he’s handled this very appropriately…KD is setting himself up for his last act. I think everybody’s intentions are crystal clear here.”
Durant is still one of the best scorers in the NBA. When he’s on his game, he’s an unstoppable force. Unfortunately for him and the Suns, his fit with Devin Booker and Bradley Beal hasn’t been what Mat Ishbia had hoped for.
Once this season is over, Durant will have one year remaining on his four-year, $194 million deal. Multiple teams will likely have interest in acquiring him to help spearhead their chances of a championship run. However, Durant won’t come cheap, which is partly why he didn’t want to be traded midway through the season.
“A player like me, I cost a lot,” Durant said during a recent appearance on “The Draymond Green Show.” “Me going into your team in the middle of the season is going to be a big blow to any team I’m going to. …
“I want my career to end on my terms. That’s the only thing I’m worried about because I see a lot of dudes who don’t get that opportunity, so I want to keep putting in that work to make that choice on my own.”
Durant’s value around the league is the reason why Phoenix will likely trade him. They need to recoup some future assets as they begin to pivot away from their failed Big Three experiment. It makes sense for both parties to wait until the summer, when a sizeable deal can be constructed among teams, allowing everyone to benefit from a blockbuster deal.
Still, Phoenix fans should enjoy Durant while they can. Because, right now, all signs are pointing toward an impending split. When that happens, Phoenix’s chances of winning a championship will likely fade away, and the front office will begin pivoting toward a much-needed rebuild.
