Andrew Abdo confirms new Rugby League game to be released later this year

The first rugby league video game since 2017 is set to be released later this year.

Fans of yesteryear can remember the earliest days of rugby league being on PC, XBox and Playstation, with the first version of the game released in 2003.

Rugby League, the game, continued to be released every few years or so from that point but there has not been anything in the gaming space for nearly a decade.

The last game was Rugby League Live 4 World Cup edition in 2017, with that version a vast improvement from where the product started.

And if that’s anything to go by, fans should see a very detailed depiction of the game in 2025.

The NBA, NFL, and football release their games annually with NRL bosses hoping fan interest can drive growth in the space.

The main concern about such a venture for the game and video game developers is the small market capital rugby league holds internationally and nationally to an extent.

Despite the potential drawbacks, NRL CEO Andrew Abdo confirmed a new game is on the way, with reports stating its release to be in early October in conjunction with developer Big Ant Studios.

“I’ve got good news; there’s a new game in the works,” Abdo told the Hello Sport podcast.

“I love games, and I’m a big believer (that) gamification is also a way of connecting with new fans. But also great for existing fans.

“Rugby League Live, I play all the time with my kids. I’m excited for the new version.”

Australian developer Big Ant Studios has produced games including AFL 23 and Cricket 24.
