Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was the shootout hero as the French giants eliminated Liverpool at Anfield.
The Italy keeper came up with saves from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones in the penalties after an epic round of 16 tie ended 1-1 on aggregate. PSG were perfect from the penalty spot.
Liverpool led 1-0 after the first leg but fell behind 12 minutes into the second when Ousmane Dembele seized on confusion in the Liverpool box to tap home.
A new era of the UEFA Champions League is here, only on Stan Sport.
Paris could have doubled their lead on the night in the first half but the hosts were the most adventurous in the second period.
In extra time, Paris asked the biggest questions and first-leg hero Alisson in the Liverpool goal came up with the biggest moment of the added 30 minutes, with an outstanding save to deny Dembele a winner.
Nunez, whose erratic finishing has angered Liverpool fans, was the second up for Liverpool after Mo Salah, quiet again during the match, thumped home his first penalty.
Donnarumma dived low to his left to pull off the save and Nunez looked crushed as he watched the rest of the game unfold.
It was a just result after the Paris team dominated three of the four halves of normal time.
“You’ve seen four perfect penalties under extreme pressure, you’ve got to give PSG big credit,” said former England legend Alan Shearer on the BBC.
“The disappointment of losing that first game and playing really, really well and coming back to Anfield and soaking up pressure and then hitting them on the break.
“Taking it to extra time and penalties and seeing those four perfect penalties, they’ve really put in a magnificent effort over the two games and they’ll say they deserve to go through.”
Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan joined in the quarter-finals.
Barcelona cruised past Benfica with Raphinha scoring twice and Lamine Yamal once in a 3-1 win at home.
The Catalan club advanced 4-1 on aggregate score after last week’s 1-0 victory and will play either Borussia Dortmund or Lille in the quarter-finals.
After a 3-0 first-leg win, Bayern Munich had no trouble advancing past German rivals Bayer Leverkusen, while Inter Milan moved on past Feyenoord after a comfortable 2-0 win in the first match.
Bayern made it to the last eight a record 23 times in the Champions League era after a 2-0 win at Leverkusen to advance 5-0 on aggregate, while Inter won 2-1 at home to move on with a 4-1 aggregate score.
