MCG firearm scare as two men arrested at Pies-Blues match after allegedly bypassing security with loaded guns

Two men have been arrested at the MCG during Thursday night’s Collingwood-Carlton AFL match, after allegedly smuggling loaded firearms into the venue.

According to The Age, a 21-year old man from Roxburgh Park and 37-year old from Broadmeadows were arrested after being found to be carrying concealed weapons hidden in their pants, having been at the centre of a mid-game crowd disturbance.

It is as yet unknown how the firearms were able to get the weapons past stadium officials and into the MCG, or whether the two men were Magpies or Blues supporters.

The incident is a significant breach of stadium security, and could have had disastrous consequences given a monstrous crowd of 82,058 attended the match.

As a consequence, there was a heightened police presence outside the venue immediately following the match, which the Magpies won 8.15 (63) to 6.10 (46) to consign the Blues to a 0-4 start to the season.

“Police were called by security at the MCG to assist with two males refusing to leave the venue due to their behaviour,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

“As a consequence, police have arrested two males and during a search it is alleged two firearms were located on each of these males.

“A 21-year-old Roxburgh Park man and a 37-year-old Broadmeadows man are currently in custody being interviewed.”
