Key Broncos Player Believes His Contract Extension Is Heading ‘In The Right Direction’

Courtland Sutton celebrated the launch of his new candy brand, Sutton Sours, on Saturday with a smile, adding a sweet touch to his offseason.

The celebrations will be brief, though, as the Denver Broncos receiver plans to return later this month for voluntary workouts and OTAs – activities that were once routine in his offseason schedule.

Despite ongoing contract extension discussions with the Broncos, Sutton expressed optimism when speaking with The Denver Post.

He believes both parties are making positive strides toward a long-term agreement.

“My team has had a really good conversation with the guys up there in the front office, and I think it’s working in the right direction,” Sutton said. “Ultimately, you just want to know you’re working in the right direction. I think they see and have seen what I’ve brought to the team.”

This marks a significant change from last year when Sutton skipped the Denver Broncos’ voluntary offseason program in clear frustration.

At that time, he only showed up for mandatory minicamp – which would have resulted in fines had he missed it – and described contract negotiations with Denver as at a “stalemate.”

Progress eventually materialized when Sutton accepted up to $1.7 million in incentives added to his existing contract.

He then delivered on the field, earning $1.5 million of those incentives by producing the most impressive season of his career – his best performance since suffering a devastating ACL tear in 2020. The timing of his bounce-back season couldn’t have been better.

Sutton is now entering the final season of a four-year, $60.1 million extension he signed in November 2021.

He’s set to receive a $13.5 million base salary for 2025 and currently has no guaranteed money remaining on his contract.

That situation will likely change if both sides can reach an agreement on an extension in the coming months.
