Lane Hutson capped an incredible rookie season with some more milestones in his team’s final game.
The Montreal Canadiens star moved into a tie for the most assists by a rookie defenceman in NHL history when he picked up a helper on Kaiden Guhle’s second goal Wednesday against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Hutson tied Hall of Famer Larry Murphy with 60 assists.
The 21-year-old now has 66 points on the season, tied for fifth all-time by a rookie defenceman with Phil Housley. The only defencemen with more points as a rookie are Gary Suter (68), Brian Leetch (71) and Larry Murphy (76).
Hutson has played a huge part in turning around the Canadiens this season. The Holland, Mich., native appeared in all 82 games for Montreal this season and is third on the team in scoring behind only captain Nick Suzuki and leading goal-scorer Cole Caufield.
