The dust has hardly settled on the end of the Sacramento Kings‘ season, but changes are officially underway.
Sacramento and general manager Monte McNair have reportedly agreed to mutually part ways following the team’s defeat in the Play-In at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks, multiple insiders reported Wednesday.
McNair had been with the Kings since the 2020 season following a 13-year stint in the Houston Rockets’ front office. He was named executive of the year in 2023 after helping build a Kings team that ended the NBA’s longest playoff drought.
However, things have not gone to plan in Northern California in the years since, as following Wednesday’s Play-In loss, the Kings will miss the playoffs for a second-straight season.
This comes after the team swung for the fences in the off-season by acquiring DeMar DeRozan in free agency, then traded away franchise point guard De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs ahead of the trade deadline.
The decision to part ways with McNair also comes in a season that saw the Kings fire former coach of the year Mike Brown in December, completely moving on from the coach and front-office pairing that brought playoff basketball back to Sacramento.
Brown was replaced with interim coach Doug Christie following his firing. He guided the team to a 27-24 record.
The Kings finished the regular season with a 40-42 record, their worst finish in the last three seasons.
