The Denver Broncos made a significant addition this offseason by signing tight end Evan Engram, who appears ideally suited for the “Joker” role that head coach Sean Payton has emphasized in his offensive system.
This versatile position requires a player who can line up anywhere on the field and create mismatches.
While Engram fills part of this need, a recent report indicates Payton isn’t done searching for dynamic playmakers and could add one in the 2025 NFL Draft.
“It feels like Sean Payton has been looking for a ‘Joker’ on his offense for quite some time. I remember when they played the Detroit Lions and the Lions had Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta go up against Denver, and the Broncos organization looking at those two players, saying, ‘Where do we get ourselves a Jahmyr Gibbs or a Sam LaPorta, somebody that could do any number of roles in our offense,’” Schefter said, via NFL on ESPN.

The Broncos appear determined to find their offensive chess piece, whether that comes in the form of a running back, wide receiver or another tight end.
Even after adding Engram, Payton wants an explosive playmaker who can elevate the offense as a whole and provide second-year quarterback Bo Nix with reliable support during his development.
Draft experts anticipate Denver will target such a player early in the process, potentially using one of its premium picks to secure a difference-maker who can give it an edge in the competitive AFC West.
The Broncos have established a solid foundation and are looking to add the final pieces needed for sustained success after making the playoffs last season.
