At the Calgary Flames‘ end-of-season availability on Saturday, Andersson revealed he played the final 12 games of the season with a broken fibula.
Andersson said he sustained the injury while blocking a shot against the Seattle Kraken on March 25.
“It’s the NHL, you’re always playing through something,” Andersson said.
The Swedish defenceman said the injury was difficult to play through right up until his final game of the season against the Vegas Golden Knights, when he finally started to feel back to normal. Andersson sat out the Flames’ final regular-season game against the Los Angeles Kings to allow some younger players in the lineup.
But he said the injury isn’t going to stop him from competing for Sweden at the world championship.
As far as his future in Calgary, Andersson explained that he’s not sure what the future holds.
Andersson will head into the 2025-26 season on the final year of a six-year, $27.3 million contract. While he’s gone on record saying he’d love to sign an extension with the Flames, he said Saturday that nothing is set in stone.
“I wish I could tell you guys I was signing on July 1, but I just don’t know,” Andersson said.
But he made sure to reiterate how much he loves playing in Calgary a number of times.
“I’ve loved every second here, and whatever happens, happens,” Andersson said.
The 28-year-old blue-liner finished the 2024-25 season with 11 goals and 20 assists in 81 games.
