While continuing his rehab assignment with the triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Thursday, the Toronto Blue Jays outfielder flashed some Gold Glove defence in the eighth inning against the Rochester Red Wings, laying out for a spectacular diving grab.
Varsho ranged into the left-centre gap to rob Drew Millas of a base hit and secure the first out of the inning.
Thursday marked the fifth game of Varsho’s rehab assignment and the third that he had spent patrolling centre field.
He finished Buffalo’s 8-1 win with a 1-for-4 performance at the plate with an RBI single and a strikeout. Over his five rehab appearances split between the Bisons and single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, Varsho is 2-for-18 with a pair of RBIs.
The eighth-inning highlight-reel snag wasn’t the only impressive play that Varsho made Thursday, as the reigning AL centre field Gold Glove winner also slid into a nice catch in the seventh.
Varsho underwent shoulder surgery in September, which has limited his ability to throw the ball from the outfield. It is unclear what his timeline is for returning to the Blue Jays.
He appeared in 136 games for Toronto last season, batting .214 with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs.
