Gia Day emotional after joyful stint with Petro Gazz

MANILA, Philippines—Petro Gazz import Gia Day couldn’t hold back her emotions after the Angels’ campaign came to an end in the 2025 AVC Champions League on Friday at Philsports Arena.

But the American spiker’s tears weren’t just out of disappointment — they were mostly from pure gratitude and joy after seeing the PVL champions make the powerhouse China club sweat in a five-set marathon.

“It just brought tears to my eyes because the girls wanted it so bad and they had so much fun and this was the most fun game I’ve ever played so I’m very thankful for them,” said Day before breaking down into tears.

Day admitted that the e experience with the Angels helped her rediscover that joy when it comes to playing volleyball.

“Coming here, I wasn’t having fun playing volleyball but with them, I had so much fun so I thank them very much.”

Despite a stellar effort from Day and the Angels, the China-based BAIC had the last laugh with a 31-29, 19-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12 win over the home bet.

Day finished with 35 points in her final game with Petro Gazz, capping off an impressive showing in the tournament.

She scored 18 despite Petro Gazz’s loss to Taipower on Monday and anotjher 18 in the Angels’ win over Hip Hing-Hong Kong just 24 hours later.

So with a string of stellar games, the question whether she’d be willing to suit up for the red and white again was natural.

And Day didn’t hesitate answering the question.

“For sure. The girls and culture [of the Philippines] are so much fun,” Day said. “I hope one day to return, for sure. It’s in my future plans if they’ll have me.”
