J.J. McCarthy Sends A Clear Message About His Ability

The Minnesota Vikings are charting a new course at QB, leaving behind last year’s trio of signal-callers, including veteran Sam Darnold.

They even passed on future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers, who reportedly showed interest in joining the franchise next season.

Instead, the Vikings are betting big on rookie J.J. McCarthy, their prized No. 10 overall selection in the 2024 draft.

McCarthy, now bouncing back from a meniscus tear in his right knee, spoke with Minnesota media Tuesday for the first time since his fall injury.

“I know I’m ready to start,” McCarthy told reporters, “because of all the work I’ve put in and just the confidence in my skills and abilities and just being able to do my job. And to simplify things to the best of my ability every single day. And just to take it one day at a time, one play at a time. And I have a tremendous coaching staff, a tremendous group of guys around me that I can lean on and they can lean on me.”

The young quarterback’s demeanor matched the organization’s confidence in him as their future leader.

The Minnesota Vikings’ medical staff recently cleared McCarthy for full participation in team workouts, which began last week.

During Tuesday’s session with the media, the rookie revealed he’s back to 215 pounds after shedding nearly 30 pounds during his recovery period.

At his lowest point this winter, McCarthy’s weight dropped to the high 180s – a dramatic change that worried fans who spotted his thinner frame in sideline footage during Vikings broadcasts.

McCarthy confirmed what ESPN had previously reported about his weight loss, explaining it resulted from limited activity early in his rehabilitation.

His recovery hit a setback in November when increased training caused knee swelling, requiring an additional procedure, a PRP injection, and another recovery period.
