Dyson Daniels of the Atlanta Hawks had a season to remember, and the league noticed just how much he achieved.
On Wednesday, Daniels was officially named the league’s Most Improved Player, beating out competition from the likes of Cade Cunningham and Ivica Zubac.
Speaking with ESPN, Daniels opened up about how he earned such an honor.
“You’ve got to separate yourself somehow, and I’ve done that on the defensive end of the floor,” Daniels said.
Daniels was a defensive monster this year, leading the NBA in steals with 229.
He also had a league-best 3.0 steals per game, which was the highest average since 1990.
It’s no surprise that Daniels was also in the running for Defensive Player of the Year, finishing second behind Evan Mobley of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
This was Daniels’ first season with the Hawks, but he has been in the league since 2022-23.
His first two seasons were with the New Orleans Pelicans, where he averaged just 4.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.
This year, Daniels put up 14.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.4 assists for his Hawks.
Although things didn’t end as Atlanta wanted this year, there is great hope that the upcoming seasons will be great for the team.
That is partly because they see what Daniels can achieve and believe he will only get better.
When he came to the Hawks, fans weren’t sure how great an acquisition Daniels was.
But after one season with the Hawks, he is one of the most beloved players in the lineup, and the team envisions great things for him in the future.
