Jay Williams ignited a fierce debate among NBA fans following Game 6 of the New York Knicks’ first-round playoff series.
Apparently, Brunson’s heroics in eliminating the Detroit Pistons provided substantial evidence for the ESPN analyst to make a bold claim.
The former NBA guard doubled down on his assessment of Brunson’s historical standing.
“I said it last year, and I’m going to say it again. And I know that he has to close the deal and win a championship. … But I think we are watching the greatest Knick ever to play in that Knick uniform. I firmly believe that,” Williams said on “Get Up.”

Late in the fourth quarter, Brunson delivered a 3-pointer to secure the victory for the Knicks. His final stat line showcased his dominance with 40 points, four rebounds and seven assists.
Williams made a valid point about the Knicks needing to win a championship.
However, Brunson continues building his case as one of the franchise’s elite talents, measuring him against legends.
Before placing Brunson alongside Knicks icons such as Frazier, Patrick Ewing and Willis Reed, he needs to further cement his legacy.
Nevertheless, his impact on New York’s recent revival cannot be overstated.
This was Brunson’s seventh playoff game with at least 40 points, tying Bernard King’s franchise record.
The Knicks have not won the NBA championship since 1973, and half a century later, the franchise continues hunting for glory.
Brunson could be the catalyst who ends the drought, but the formidable Boston Celtics stand in his path in the second round.
If Brunson manages to guide the Knicks past the Celtics and ultimately to a championship, Williams’ seemingly premature declaration might prove prophetic after all.
