HIGHLIGHTS: UAAP Season 87 volleyball Final Four – NU vs FEU, La Salle vs UST

It took nearly a year, but when the moment came, La Salle made sure it counted—and hurt.

The Lady Spikers pummelled University of Santo Tomas on Saturday night, 25-22, 11-25, 25-21, 25-21, to punch a ticket to the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball championship series and gain a measure of payback for last year’s ouster.

Skipper Angel Canino delivered 19 points, as Amie Provido and Shevana Laput came through for a second straight game against the Golden Tigresses as the Taft-based squad, a traditional powerhouse, moved on to challenge National University in a best-of-three series that gets going May 11.

“I’m sort of happy, because we had a slow start and it took us a while to adjust … I’m expecting that we’ll be better in the next game. We have a lot to work on,” said head coach Ramil de Jesus, who steered the proud program closer to a 13th UAAP crown.

“Really glad because we finally got back against UST. We really prepared for this because we want to exact revenge for last season when they beat us,” said Provido, referring to their Final Four encounter back on May 5 the year before, crashing out of the title chase after five grueling sets.

UAAP Rookie of the Year Angge Poyos had 22 points while Reg Jurado 21 for UST, whose shot of redemption came to a grinding halt.

La Salle looked like it was in for a long night after a lethargic second set and a feisty stand from UST in the third.

But the Lady Spikers weren’t going to let a chance for retribution go to waste.

“UST wanted to go back to the Finals, but we wanted it more because we have a goal for this team. And we’ll continue trying to reach that. The real battle just started,” said Canino.
