MANILA, Philippines—Carl Tamayo starred as he led the Changwon LG Sakers to a 75-66 win over the Seoul SK Knights in Game 1 of the Korean Basketball League (KBL) Finals at Jamsil Students Gymnasium on Monday.

The Filipino import showed steely nerves in his maiden appearance in the KBL championship round, notching a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

The 24-year-old forward was on target from long range, hitting four of his eight tries. He also had a couple of assists and a block.

Tamayo, the former University of the Philippines standout, inched closer to making history as the first Filipino to win titles in the B.League and KBL.

Although he hardly played, Tamayo was a member of the Ryukyu Golden Kings squad that claimed the B.League crown in 2023.

Big man Assem Marei backstopped Tamayo with his own double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds.

The LG Sakers shoot for a commanding 2-0 advantage in the best-of-seven series on Wednesday.
