Former Pro Bowl Safety Wants To Be With Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles paid the price for a Super Bowl championship as they’ve seen one player after another leave their star-studded defense to sign for more money elsewhere this offseason.

It’s an unfortunate cost of doing business, because you can’t pay everybody, but some help could be on the way with a Pro Bowl safety lingering on the free agent market.

During a recent appearance on NFL Network, Brian Baldinger pointed out that Justin Simmons wants to play for the Eagles.

“It’s not just a reunion with Justin Simmons and Vic Fangio, he wants to come to Philadelphia. … They lost Darius Slay. They lost some leaders in that secondary. He provides that,” Baldinger said, via Dov Kleiman.

Simmons has 32 career interceptions in his NFL seasons, the first eight with the Denver Broncos, who waived him prior to last season.

He signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons and posted 62 tackles and two interceptions in 16 games.

Atlanta’s defense overall wasn’t good, but Simmons proved he can still be one of the best safeties in the league at 31 years old.

It’s a surprise that he is still available at this point of the offseason, and Simmons would make a lot of sense alongside Reed Blankenship at the back of the Eagles’ secondary.

Those two would form quite the safety duo, and Baldinger sounds confident that a signing could be imminent.

Simmons is likely looking for a contender at this stage of his career, and there are few better options than Philadelphia if his goal is to win a championship.
