The Oklahoma City Thunder were hoping to grab a 2-1 series lead over the Denver Nuggets on Friday night.
Instead, they were taken down in overtime and have fallen further behind the Nuggets.
Following the game, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander got honest about how the game changed and how he didn’t perform up to the standard he has set for himself.
“The game gets slower, execution matters more,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “In those moments when the game slows down, it usually comes down to your best players making shots and making plays. I didn’t do a good enough job of that tonight, and I think that’s the main reason for the outcome.”
Gilgeous-Alexander will probably still win MVP for the 2024-25 season, but he wasn’t looking like it on Friday night.
He had one of the worst shooting nights of his career, scoring 18 points on 7-of-22 from the field.
He was just 1-of-8 in the fourth quarter and didn’t score at all in overtime.
He wasn’t the only MVP candidate not performing well, as Nikola Jokic of the Nuggets also had problems all night.
But it was Gilgeous-Alexander’s team that ended up with the loss, and now they look to be in a dangerous position.
The Thunder were the favorites to win the West and possibly earn a championship this year, so anything less than that will be considered a disappointment.
Gilgeous-Alexander knows what went wrong for his team on Friday and wants to change that moving forward.
But is that possible, or will the Nuggets get the best of the Thunder again?
If they do, OKC will be perilously close to ending their season.
