The Tampa Bay Rays will not have one of their best hitters available for this week’s series in Toronto against the Blue Jays.
Designated hitter Yandy Diaz was placed on the restricted list ahead of the series, which begins Tuesday night. Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times reports that the reason is that Diaz’s passport is in the process of being renewed and that his new passport has not arrived yet.
The 33-year-old leads the Rays with 20 RBIs this season and is second on the team with six home runs.
The nine-year veteran has spent the last seven seasons with the Rays and has hit the Blue Jays hard in the past. He has seven home runs, 11 doubles and 24 RBIs in 64 games played against the Blue Jays in his career.
Infielder Coco Montes was recalled from triple-A by the Rays in a corresponding move.
