The San Francisco 49ers continue reshaping their roster as they prepare for another competitive season in the NFC West.
They confirmed two roster moves on Monday, including one that had been previously reported.
Veteran kicker Greg Joseph has signed a one-year contract, creating legitimate competition for Jake Moody, who faced notable struggles during the 2024 season.
To accommodate that addition, the Niners waived defensive lineman Alex Barrett, via Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Joseph enters a direct competition with Moody, who has served as San Francisco’s primary kicker for the past two seasons.
In 14 appearances last season, Moody converted just 24 of 34 field goal attempts. His accuracy issues were consistent, missing five kicks from 40 to 49 yards and another five from beyond 50 yards.
This marks a significant regression from his rookie season, when he missed four kicks total after he was a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Joseph took a winding path through the league in 2024, spending time with the New York Giants, Washington Commanders and New York Jets.
However, he previously established himself with the Minnesota Vikings from 2021 to 2023, playing all 51 games during that span.
He also has a connection to 49ers special teams coordinator Brant Boyer from their shared time with the Jets.
Since joining the NFL in 2018, Joseph has maintained solid consistency, connecting on 116 of 141 field goal attempts for an 82.3 percent success rate.
He has also converted 157 of 173 extra-point attempts.
The 49ers will evaluate how he performs against Moody in what promises to be an intriguing battle.
Barrett, who registered two tackles in three appearances in 2024, had signed a reserve/future contract with San Francisco in April.
