Trey Yesavage didn’t miss a beat as he began his climb up the Toronto Blue Jays organizational ladder.
Yesavage struck out 10 hitters and racked up 19 whiffs over 4.0 innings on Tuesday night as he made his debut with the High-A Vancouver Canadians. Yesavage did allow two runs, two hits and issued three walks while tossing 73 pitches, but settled in as the night wore on.
Toronto’s No. 2 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, struck out seven of the last eight Eugene Emeralds hitters he faced and didn’t allow a base runner in the third or fourth innings.
He impressively worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the second, getting three straight outs on a pop-up and two strikeouts.
Yesavage was officially promoted to Vancouver from Class-A Dunedin on Tuesday.
The 20th-overall pick in last summer’s draft out of East Carolina racked up 55 strikeouts over seven starts and 33.1 innings with Dunedin to begin his pro career. He also posted a 2.43 ERA while only issuing eight walks and holding opposing hitters to a .162 average. The 21-year-old right-hander was recently ranked as the No. 71 prospect in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline in light of his excellent start to the year.
Yesavage has now punched out 10 or more hitters in four of his eight starts this season.
He wasn’t the only Blue Jays top prospect to perform well for the Canadians on Tuesday, as shortstop Arjun Nimmala was 2-for-2 with a three-run homer, triple and walk through the sixth inning of the contest.
The Canadians now feature eight of the Blue Jays’ top 30 prospects after Yesavage was promoted alongside 2024 second-round pick Khal Stephen. Stephen is scheduled to make his Vancouver debut on Thursday.
