Wallaroos’ Achilles heel brutally exposed as Canada put Yapp’s side to the sword in reality check

The Wallaroos have copped a reality three months out from the women’s World Cup, losing to Canada 45-7 in Brisbane on Friday night.

After beating the USA in Canberra last weekend and struggling against a sloppy Black Ferns side a week earlier, the world number two side exposed the Wallaroos’ Achilles heel.

Jo Yapp’s side lost seven lineouts and two scrums, while they were also mauled to death by a well-drilled Canadian outfit that ran in seven tries.

The Canadians led 26-0 at half-time, before Wallaroos winger Desiree Miller got the home side on the scoreboard after running a nice line on the inside of Georgina Friedrichs before pumping the legs and scoring.

But the visitors scored another three unanswered tries to blow away the Wallaroos.

“Canada were really physical, set-piece was really challenging and we know we’ve got to step up moving forward,” Wallaroos captain and blindside flanker Siokapesi Palu said.

Canadian captain Alex Tessier, who was lethal for the visitors in the midfield and crossed the tryline in the second half, said she was thrilled that they put away Australia after drawing with the Black Ferns 27-all last weekend.

“Obviously, the focus this week was on us. We would have liked the win last week, but we had to move on quickly,” she said.

“I’m very proud of the girls, it was a decent win, we put a lot of points on the board and I think we controlled what we needed to control.”
