Blues’ double injury concerns amid spying claims with Bulldogs star rushed into squad

Stephen Crichton has sent a massive scare through the Blues camp, after failing to finish a training session, just over 48 hours ahead of the opening game of the State of Origin series.

The Bulldogs’ skipper limped off the park and was seen with an ice pack on his left thigh.

The Blues are hopeful that it is just a cork and the centre will be fit to take the field on Wednesday night but they have rushed Canterbury teammate Matt Burton into camp.

South Sydney’s Campbell Graham is on standby to replace Crichton with Burton potentially elevated to 18th man duties given his ability to play in the halves, centre or lock.

The Blues have also been disrupted by claims of a “spy” in the stands at Ballymore Stadium leaking vision of Crichton limping from the field during the closed session.

According to a NewsCorp report, they have been studying their own drone footage of training trying to identify who had secretly filmed training from a nearby vantage point.

They are concerned that if the images of Crichton being injured have found their way into the media then the Queensland team may have also gained access – the accredited media were barred from training after the first 15 minutes when they were allowed to take vision and images during the team warm-ups.

Crichton came into the camp already under a cloud and has been on restricted training after playing with a groin injury on the same leg in the Bulldogs’ last NRL game.

Blues football manager Frank Ponissi was backing Crichton to be right for kick-off.

“You’d have to say a little doubt but we’re very confident. More importantly our medical staff are confident that in the morning he’ll be fine,” he told 2GB on Monday night.

“He’s been getting treatment all afternoon, it’s just a cork, there’s nothing else and you get a fair idea after 24 hours.

“Tomorrow morning we’ll have a fair idea if he’s definitely playing or in more doubt but at this stage our medical staff think he should be fine in the morning.”

Prop Payne Haas also remains uncertain to feature in the Origin opener after testing his injured leg to the side of the team’s first Brisbane session.

The Blues, after a rain-hit week of preparation in NSW, descended on a sun-drenched Ballymore on Monday ahead of Wednesday’s clash at Suncorp Stadium.

Haas, carrying a quadriceps injury suffered during the Broncos’ loss to St George Illawarra earlier this month, began the warm-up with his team.

But he was then ushered to the side for specialised fitness drills, testing his ailment before the media were excused.

NSW officials remain confident barnstorming prop Haas will play, with Melbourne prop Stefano Utoikamanu on standby.

“He was able to do most of the stuff,” Blues utility Connor Watson said of Haas.

“He’s super important for us, been one of the main parts of this Origin team … as soon as he started playing first grade.

“(He has had) such a great impact on the game, so powerful, so fit, a real joy to play with.”
