Converge rallied from an 18-point deficit to deny Terrafirma’s upset bid and claim a 117-103 victory in the PBA Philippine Cup on the day it agreed to trade Jordan Heading to TNT for the rights to Mikey Williams.
King Caralipio provided an unlikely boost and finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Alec Stockton, Justine Baltazar and Justin Arana scored 17 points apiece as the FiberXers improved to 6-4.
But the game became almost an afterthought with the impending move of Heading to the Tropang 5G for Williams, who has not played for almost two years following a contract dispute with TNT management.
Trade papers have been submitted shortly before the league closed its office on Wednesday, and Heading later confirmed that he had been informed of the trade.
Heading, who has not played this conference due to a back injury, was in attendance and bid goodbye to almost every member of the team inside the dugout following the game.
The former Gilas Pilipinas mainstay is set to end his short stint with the FiberXers, who acquired Heading’s rights last conference from the Dyip and performed beyond expectations during the Commissioner’s Cup.
Converge wraps up the eliminations on June 11 against San Miguel Beer at Ninoy Aquino Stadium in what could potentially be Williams’ debut.
Meanwhile, the loss eliminated Terrafirma after dropping to 1-8 as it has not won since defeating Phoenix to start the conference.
Stanley Pringle scored 23 points while Louie Sangalang and Keith Zaldivar added 18 and 17, respectively, for the slumping Dyip, whose fate remains uncertain amid talks to potentially sell the franchise to the Zamboanga Valientes.
The Dyip looked poised for an unlikely upset with a 61-43 lead in the second half before the FiberXers slowly trimmed the gap.
Their next game is on June 4 against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters at the same venue.
