Encouraging Details Emerge About Broderick Jones’ Weight In OTAs

The Pittsburgh Steelers have more questions than answers ahead of this season.

They don’t know who their quarterback will be, and their offensive line is shaky at best.

That’s why fans might be thrilled to hear that Broderick Jones is ready to improve.

According to a report by Mike DeFabo of The Athletic, Jones has been hitting the gym in the offseason and has dropped a lot of weight.

“Jones reported to OTAs noticeably leaner, which was intentional. He played last year around 325-330 pounds and has now dropped about 20 pounds to be around 305 or 310. At times in Jones’ second season, he didn’t have the same quick feet that were a signature of his game. By slimming down, he’s been more explosive at practice,” DeFabo wrote.

This is a great sign from a player who’s been criticized for his inconsistent play during his brief time in the NFL.

Showing up in shape to OTAs is a great way to set the tone, send a message and let everybody know you’re ready to take care of business.

Also, he could benefit from slimming down by becoming more mobile and swift.

He often struggled against quicker and athletic edge rushers, and while size is pivotal for a tackle, being more mobile has never hurt anybody.

As the Steelers continue to wait on Aaron Rodgers, they don’t know who will be their starting QB, but they will most likely continue to be a run-heavy team as long as coordinator Arthur Smith and head coach Mike Tomlin are there.

Jones is entering the third year of his rookie contract, and with the fifth-year option and a possible extension looming, he will be under a lot of pressure to prove he can be a long-term answer at offensive tackle.
