MANILA, Philippines — The Meralco Bolts and Chris Newsome could breathe a sigh of relief after clinching a spot in the PBA Philippine Cup playoffs and closing the eliminations with a win.

But instead of relaxing, Newsome and company are keeping their focus sharp ahead of next month’s Basketball Champions League in Dubai.

“It’s a good place to be in to get that momentum going into the playoffs,” said Newsome after their 82-73 win over Ginebra at Araneta Coliseum on Friday.

“The only thing is we have to cut that momentum to go overseas and play a different style of basketball [for the BCL].”

Rather than feeling settled with their 6-5 record, the Bolts will immediately train for the Dubai games, which run from July 9 to 15.

Newsome, who finished with 15 points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal, reiterated that while they are assured of a playoff spot, staying sharp for the quarterfinals is another thing–and the BCL offers the perfect test.
