Skipper Harry Grant is set to sit out Melbourne’s NRL clash with Gold Coast after his State of Origin shocker.
The star hooker was the only member of the Storm’s Origin contingent to return to Melbourne from Brisbane, given Saturday’s clash is a Titans home game at Cbus Super Stadium.
Cameron Munster, Xavier Coates, Trent Loiero and Stefano Utoikamanu all remained in Queensland, with Melbourne players joining them later on Friday.
Gold Coast are sweating on the availability of captain Tino Fa’asuamaleaui after he was wearing the scars of battle following his return to the State of Origin arena.
The Maroons prop, who missed last season with an ACL rupture, had stitches in a badly cut left eye that had gone black after the 18-6 loss to NSW on Wednesday night.
Of concern was the swelling around his eye socket area as he aims to line up on Saturday afternoon against his former club Melbourne.
“I pride myself on backing up from Origin. I intend to play,” he said.
Fellow Gold Coast and Maroons forwards Moeaki Fotuaika and Beau Fermor have been cleared to play at Cbus Super Stadium.
North Queensland quartet Jeremiah Nanai, Reuben Cotter, Tom Dearden and Reece Robson were also cleared of any injuries and should back up against Wests Tigers on Saturday night.
Brisbane had two players involved in Origin – NSW’s man of the match Payne Haas and Maroons lock Pat Carrigan.
Both were set for medicals on Thursday ahead of Saturday night’s away clash with Manly.
Haas battled a quad injury in the 10 days leading up to Origin but still was the best player on the park in a remarkable display.
Newcastle captain Kalyn Ponga and Dragons centre face the worst schedule of the week – they are the only players facing a two-day turnaround after Origin, with the Knights travelling to Kogarah to take on St George Illawarra in the only Friday night fixture of the truncated round.
Former Australian rugby sevens star Nathan Lawson will make his NRL debut for the Dragons this Friday after winger Christian Tuipulotu was ruled out with a hamstring problem.
Lachie Galvin won’t play for Wests Tigers this weekend, with the teenage prodigy “excused” from training while he edges closer to a mid-season move to Canterbury. Still technically under contract at the Tigers, Galvin was not named in the No.6 jersey on Tuesday afternoon for Saturday’s clash against North Queensland.
The Tigers have instead handed Galvin’s old spot to Heath Mason, with fellow half Latu Fainu not yet back from a hand injury.

Tom Trbojevic is set to join his brother Jake on the sidelines for Manly’s home game against Brisbane, after aggravating a persistent issue with his thigh.
He will be rested from Manly’s clash with Brisbane after aggravating his corked thigh, while Jake will also delay his return from a concussion.
The Sea Eagles confirmed on Tuesday their star fullback had aggravated the cork in last week’s loss to Parramatta, after battling the issue for the past month.
Officials insisted they were taking a “conservative” approach by resting the No.1, and that the issue was not a serious one.

Canberra hooker Tom Starling has copped a one-game ban as captain Joseph Tapine escaped suspension for two reportable incidents in his side’s gutsy win over the Warriors.
Tapine will be free to face the Sydney Roosters on Sunday after being placed on report twice by referee Adam Gee in Canberra’s 16-10 victory over the Warriors. He was not even charged for a crusher tackle on Warriors fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, but was slugged with a $3000 fine for a grade-one shoulder charge on Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.
Raiders prop Corey Horsburgh was also handed a $1800 fine after being charged for dangerous contact.
There was no such luck for Starling, however, with the hooker hit with a grade-two dangerous contact charge for a high shot on Warriors playmaker Chanel Harris-Tavita in the 77th minute. Starling was sin-binned at the time and will miss just one game.
Ronaldo Mulitalo has added to Cronulla’s backline issues, with the winger facing a one-match ban for his late shot that levelled Mark Nawaqanitawase although the Sharks have the bye this week.
Sea Eagles forward Haumole Olakau’atu was charged with contrary conduct from Friday night’s loss to the Eels after he was tackled by Luca Moretti and dropped his knee into his opponent’s chest. He was fined $1800.
Bulldogs forward Josh Curran copped a $3000 fine rather than taking a two-game ban for a high tackle on Max Feagai in their loss to the Dolphins.
Dolphins hooker Kurt Donoghoe was also fined for dangerous contact and will pay $1000 with an early guilty plea.
