Blue Jays place Varsho on 10-day IL, recall Schneider and reinstate Swanson

The 2024 Gold Glover was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain and will be replaced on the 26-man roster by Davis Schneider, who was recalled from triple-A.

According to the team, Varsho has a grade-1 hamstring strain and will be considered week-to-week.

Right-handed reliever Erik Swanson was also reinstated from the 60-day IL, and in turn, left-handed starter Easton Lucas was optioned to the Buffalo Bisons. Swanson was recovering from median nerve entrapment in his pitching elbow.

Varsho, 28, is tied with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the team lead with eight home runs despite playing in only 24 of the Blue Jays’ 58 games thus far.

The left-handed hitting outfielder has also amassed a major-league-leading 60 defensive runs saved since 2023.

Schneider started the season with the Blue Jays, but struggled to find a rhythm at the plate, recording a single hit along with five walks in 21 plate appearances before being optioned to triple-A Buffalo.

During his time with the Bisons this season, the 26-year-old has slashed .226/.350/.391 with four home runs and 18 RBIs.

Furthermore, according to manager John Schneider, second baseman Andres Gimenez (quad) and catcher Tyler Heineman (concussion) remain on track to rejoin the Blue Jays ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.
