Baltimore Orioles rookie Coby Mayo had an eventful day on Saturday in the team’s 4-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. He not only recorded his first big league RBI with a single in the fourth inning, but he also helped spark a bench-clearing incident when he tried to buy an interference call during a run-down.
After hitting his single to left field, Mayo was trying to reach second base on the throw home. The White Sox instead cut off the throw on the infield, resulting in Mayo finding himself in a rundown. It was at that point that he tried to buy an interference call by deliberately running out of the baseline and throwing a forearm into White Sox second baseman Lenyn Sosa.
That did not go over well with the White Sox, and especially Sosa, after Mayo gave him another shove on the way back to the dugout.
That is when both benches briefly emptied.
