MANILA, Philippines — Rain or Shine has little room to relax after defeating Terrafirma in the PBA Philippine Cup at Philsports Arena on Wednesday.
Following the Elasto Painters’ 94-85 win over the Dyip, they have just one day before flying to Cagayan de Oro, where a major test awaits in their bid to prove they’re legitimate contenders.
“Our next two games are heavy before we end the elimination round. We’re still trying to get to the top four, so this game, to us, still has some bearing. San Miguel is a different kind of team who’s playing at a different level,” said coach Yeng Guiao.
“When it comes to the all-Filipino, you have to get by them before you call yourself a contender.”
Rain or Shine, which improved to 6-3, will face San Miguel Beer at CDO City Convention Center on Saturday, looking to further bolster its twice-to-beat hopes.
The challenge, however, is steep, with the Beermen — holders of a 6-2 record — expected to be at full strength, including reigning MVP June Mar Fajardo.
Still, Jhonard Clarito said their win over Terrafirma is a promising sign ahead of the crucial match.
“This is a good sign for us heading into our next game in Cagayan, but we still have lots of flaws and lapses in our defense,” said Clarito, who tallied 12 points, five rebounds, and three steals.
“Like coach Yeng always tells us, though, we can fix them all during practice,” he added.
