One of the top prospects in hockey remains undecided about his next steps.
Caleb Desnoyers spent his last two seasons with the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL and was even named team captain ahead of next year.
Yet in speaking to the Athletic’s Scott Wheeler on Thursday, the 18-year-old left the door open on where he’d play next.
“No decision has been taken yet,” Desnoyers said. “My main goal is to play in the NHL as soon as possible, and if not I’ll be at the place where I’m able to be in the NHL the year after, and Moncton’s a great choice from that.”
Desnoyers is among the many prospects in Buffalo for the 2025 NHL scouting combine, but the young centre won’t be participating in any testing as he’s dealing with injuries in both wrists, per Wheeler — injuries he’s said to have been dealing with since last November.
“I’ll recover fast but might need to do some stuff.”
Despite playing through those ailments, Desnoyers was able to make a big impact for the Wildcats. Through 56 games in 2024-25, he racked up 84 points (35 goals, 49 assists) and was a plus-51. He then put up 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists) through 19 post-season appearances as Moncton went on to win the QMJHL title.
As for where the left-shot centre could end up if not back with the Wildcats, Wheeler noted that Boston College of the NCAA has shown interest in Desnoyers, having made trips to Moncton already. The Eagles were the top-ranked team heading into the 2025 men’s Frozen Four tournament, but were upset by the University of Denver in the quarterfinals.
