Luongo now a fan of Marchand after Panthers heroics

Roberto Luongo has clearly buried his hatchet with Brad Marchand.

The Hall of Fame goaltender tweeted “Favorite player of all time” after Marchand scored the overtime winner for the Panthers in Game 2 against the Oilers.

Luongo, who is now a special adviser to Panthers general manager Bill Zito, wasn’t thinking the same thing about Marchand back in 2011.

Back then, when Luongo was tending goal for the Canucks and Marchand was a rookie for the Bruins, the two clashed in the Stanley Cup Final. And Marchand dominated Luongo in the matchup.

The then 21-year-old Marchand scored five goals in the seven-game series, including one in Game 6 and two in Game 7 when the Canucks had two chances to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history but came up short.

That was Luongo’s best chance to win the Stanley Cup as a player, but now, with Marchand on his team, Luongo is happy to be benefiting from his big-game heroics.

“Luo’s awesome, he’s an incredible person,” Marchand said Friday night after the win. “Happy to be on his teams.”
