On Sunday night, Dallas Cowboys EDGE Micah Parsons called head coach Brian Schottenheimer as part of TikTok’s “good night” trend.
In the clip, the coach promised Parsons the team would resolve his contract situation. Of course, the 26-year-old pass-rusher is set to play on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal in 2025.
“I know this is weird for everybody, but look, you’re handling everything the right way, bro,” Schottenheimer told Parsons. “This thing is going to get worked out.”
Now, it’s time for the Cowboys to fulfill that promise.
Last week, Parsons tweeted he would attend mandatory minicamp. On Monday, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram spotted him at the Cowboys facility, The Star, in Frisco, Texas, signaling he’ll be present for the start of minicamp on Tuesday.
Parsons, however, has not clarified whether he’ll attend training camp in late July without a new contract. Even if he does, that doesn’t mean he’ll participate in on-field drills. The defensive stud missing time during training camp would be costly for the Cowboys, especially with new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus installing his system.
At the annual league meeting in April, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he contacted Parsons about his deal without his agent, David Mulugheta. The edge-rusher subsequently tweeted he wouldn’t sign a new contract without his agent.
Since then, the team has made little progress in contract negotiations with Parsons.
“No different than anything else. I’ll let you know when it happens,” Cowboys chief operating officer and co-owner Stephen Jones said in a news conference on June 4.
Parsons could command a deal that tops Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase’s annual average of $40.25M, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league.
Still, price shouldn’t be a concern when it’s a player of Parsons’ caliber. Since being drafted No. 12 by Dallas in 2021, he has 52.5 sacks and has earned two first-team All-Pro nods.
The Cowboys solidifying their future with Parsons would ensure Schottenheimer has plenty of good nights in Dallas.
