Insider Reveals What He’s Hearing About T.J. Watt’s Contract Situation

The Pittsburgh Steelers face a critical offseason decision as they prepare for the 2025 season without one of their most valuable assets.

T.J. Watt’s absence from voluntary workouts has sparked speculation about his future with the franchise, particularly as contract negotiations loom large.

The star pass rusher appears positioned to reset the defensive player market with a deal that could eclipse current records.

His situation has become a focal point for a Steelers organization looking to maintain its competitive edge.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport addressed the situation during his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” offering insight into the ongoing discussions.

“I believe it’s gonna happen, I believe they’ll get to a number that everyone can be happy with. It just hasn’t happened yet, while the edge market is kinda in flux with Trey Hendrickson and Micah not done, like, this is another one that we’re waiting on,” Rapoport said.

Watt enters the final season of his four-year, $112 million extension, which will pay him slightly over $21 million this fall.

That figure now appears significantly below market value for elite edge rushers. Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett currently holds the record for defensive players with his $40 million annual contract.

The timing creates complexity for Pittsburgh’s front office.

With the edge rusher market still developing and other prominent players awaiting new deals, Watt’s representatives likely want to see how those negotiations unfold before finalizing terms.

Despite posting his lowest sack total since his rookie season with 11.5 last year, Watt remains among the league’s premier defenders.

His eight seasons of elite production have established him as a cornerstone player worth top-tier compensation.

The Steelers must balance fiscal responsibility with the reality of keeping their defensive anchor satisfied as he approaches his 31st birthday.
