Munster replaces DCE as Maroons skipper in landmark Origin game

Cameron Munster has been named as Queensland’s new skipper after Billy Slater’s decision to drop incumbent Daly Cherry-Evans from game two.

Munster, 30, will be playing his 20th State of Origin match against New South Wales in Perth on June 18.

Slater informed the playing group of the appointment following a training session on Tuesday morning.

Slater also confirmed Canterbury Bulldogs forward Kurt Mann will make his Origin debut.

Cherry-Evans led the Maroons in their demoralising loss at home in the first encounter this season, but was ruthlessly cast aside by Slater, having played 26 Origins.

We don’t take any decision lightly, whether it’s a player keeping their spot or another player coming in. All Queenslanders are considered,” Slater said earlier this week.

“We just feel Tom is the right person for the number seven jersey right now. First of all, you won’t hear a negative word from me about Daly Cherry-Evans.

“What he has given this jersey and what he has done for this footy team and this group, that will be with all Queenslanders and with Daly for the rest of his life.

“No one can take that away from him. We just feel that Tom Dearden has earned the opportunity to play in the number seven jersey.”
