The news of Angel Reese being named the Sportswoman of the Year at the BET Awards 2025 left the sporting world stunned. Rather than celebrating the Chicago Sky star’s achievement, many social media users were baffled by the decision, especially considering that the likes of Coco Gauff, Simone Biles and A’ja Wilson were among those nominated.
While some users criticized the BET Awards for their questionable selection criteria, others have bluntly stated that Reese had not accomplished enough to receive such a prestigious honor over other deserving athletes.
Having secured the honor already in both 2023 and 2024, Angel Reese has now joined elite company by winning the BET Sportswoman of the Year award for a third consecutive time. She joins Serena Williams as only the second athlete to achieve this feat.
Whether or not the BET Awards’ decision was justified is debatable, but Angel Reese had a notable year.
In her WNBA rookie season, she averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game, She followed that up with a dominant showing in the 2025 Unrivaled season, where she led Rose BC to a championship while averaging 13.3 points and 12.1 rebounds per game, while winning the Defensive Player of the Year award.
Angel Reese congratulates Coco Gauff for latest achievement
Angel Reese joined many proud Americans in celebrating Coco Gauff’s victory at the 2025 French Open on May 7.
Despite enduring a tough loss herself, with the Chicago Sky losing to the Indiana Fever 79-52, Reese still took a moment to show support to her fellow BET Awards nominee.
She reposted a Bleacher Report highlight to her Instagram story, captioning it:
“THE QUEEN 👑”

Gauff put up a stunning performance at the Philippe-Chatrier to defeat World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling three-set match, clinching a 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 comeback win. With this victory, the 21-year-old becomes the first American since Serena Williams to capture the French Open title on the iconic red clay of Roland Garros.
