MANILA, Philippines–The blockbuster trade between TNT and Converge a few weeks ago has already started to make waves — at least on one end.
Jordan Heading, who was sent to TNT by Converge, made his debut for the Tropang 5G last Sunday against Barangay Ginebra. But Mikey Williams, the centerpiece coming back to the FiberXers in the deal, has yet to suit up.
With Converge wrapping up its PBA Philippine Cup elimination round campaign, all eyes are now on whether Williams will finally join the team in time for the playoffs.
Coach Franco Atienza admitted the situation is out of his hands, with no clear update from upper management on the status of the former TNT star.
“I think we reached out, but I just don’t know. It’s all on the upper management now,” said Atienza after their 100-97 win over San Miguel Beer on Wednesday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
“Wala pa ring word sa akin. I’m still waiting if we’re going to meet him for the playoffs or not, but I still have no word about it.”
Despite the absence of both Williams and Heading, Converge managed a strong showing in the PBA All-Filipino conference, finishing the eliminations with a 7-4 record.
Atienza added that he’s uncertain of Williams’ current whereabouts, leaving his availability for the quarterfinals hanging.
“I can just speculate. I can’t be sure if he’s still abroad or here, but I would suppose he’s abroad,” said the first-year head coach.
