“Just hasn’t been what we’re capable of”

Josef Newgarden is eyeing a much-needed turnaround in form as the IndyCar Series heads to the Bommarito Automotive Group 500. The 34-year-old is currently in the midst of his longest winless run since the 2017 season.

The Team Penske driver, who had entered the 2025 campaign with hopes of challenging for the series championship, has witnessed his campaign unfold in a manner far from what he had envisioned. However, ahead of the upcoming WWT Raceway event, he is hoping for a resurgence in his season form.

Sharing his thoughts with the media via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Josef Newgarden touched on his form and also stressed the need for him and his team to deliver a strong outing at the oval event.

“This place has always been special for us. We have had some really good runs this year, just no results to show for it. It just hasn’t been what we’re capable of doing.”

It indeed hasn’t been a positive season for Newgarden overall. Through seven races of the 2025 season, the former Ed Carpenter Racing driver has only managed one podium finish—at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix.

Josef Newgarden on the crucial factor to win the Bommarito Automotive Group 500

Josef Newgarden also shared his thoughts on what it would take to clinch victory at the Bommarito Automotive Group 500. The 34-year-old won the 2024 edition of the race.

The Team Penske driver, who heads into this year’s edition of the race with the record for the most wins at the Illinois oval circuit—five—stressed the importance of having a good race car to secure victory. Detailing his thoughts with the media, he stated:

“It always comes back to just having a good race car. I have been fortunate to have that over the years. We plan to just bring the same performance we’ve been bringing all year long. Just try and get to the finish line with the result that matches the performances.”

The Bommarito Automotive Group 500 circuit statistically remains the track where Josef Newgarden has enjoyed the most race victories throughout his career. The Penske driver has clinched five of his 31 career race wins at the circuit. He has also claimed victory in the last two editions of the race.

Whether the Nashville native, who is currently on an 11-race winless streak, can extend his impressive run at the circuit when the race kicks off under the night skies remains to be seen. It should be noted that the Illinois race is set to debut as the first late evening race of the IndyCar calendar for the 2025 season.
