The Houston Texans made a big gamble in the offseason.
Their offensive line was utterly disappointing last season, and trading Laremy Tunsil won’t do much to help their case.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans argued that everybody would have to step up and claimed that they would shake things up to bounce back after a dismal campaign.
Notably, that includes moving Tytus Howard to right guard.
Howard has primarily played left guard and right tackle in the past, so while he’s showcased positional versatility and impressive adaptability in the past, this is still a major challenge.
Even so, he’s looking forward to it:
“The more you can do .. I’m a guy who can play at every spot on the offensive line. I can play at a high level at every spot. I just gotta keep working and continue to get better. I feel like this year is gonna be my biggest year,” Howard said.
Shaq Mason didn’t look the part last season, and Juice Scruggs wasn’t much better, either.
The Texans signed veteran running back Nick Chubb, and establishing the run with him and Joe Mixon will be crucial to help C.J. Stroud bounce back after a worrisome second-year regression.
As things stand now, it seems like Cam Robinson will start at left tackle, with Laken Tomlinson by his side at left guard.
Jake Andrews will get the nod at center, with Howard by his side at right guard and second-year pro Blake Fisher at right tackle.
The bar won’t be that high after giving up 52 sacks in the regular season.
But after watching the Kansas City Chiefs get to Stroud a whopping eight times in the playoffs, it was painfully evident that something needed to change, and this unit will be under a lot of pressure this season.
