Sceptres re-sign former MVP Natalie Spooner, forward Jesse Compher

Natalie Spooner and Jesse Compher are staying in Toronto.

Both players re-signed with the Sceptres on two-year contracts, the team announced on Tuesday.

Spooner, 34, recorded three goals and two assists in 14 games for the Sceptres last season after returning from a knee injury she suffered during the 2024 playoffs.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue building something special here and can’t wait to bring a Walter Cup to Toronto,” Spooner said.

She won the Billie Jean King MVP Award during the PWHL’s inaugural 2024 season after scoring 20 goals while adding seven assists in 24 games.

Spooner, of Scarborough, Ont., also won IIHF Player of the Year after leading Canada to gold at worlds in 2024.

The three-time Olympic and two-time gold medallist contributed one assist in four playoff games as the Sceptres were eliminated by the eventual champion Minnesota Frost.

“Natalie has been an important piece to our puzzle in Toronto,” said Sceptres general manager Gina Kingsbury. “She is a key member of our organization both on and off the ice. She is a world-class athlete that has shown just how impactful she can be in this league.”

Compher, 25, was 17th in league scoring last season after recording nine goals and nine assists in 30 games.

The Northbrook, Ill., native was selected 26th overall by Toronto in the inaugural PWHL draft.

“I’m so excited to be back in Toronto. Playing in front of a sold-out crowd in the best city, with the most passionate fans, is an absolute honour,” Compher said.

Toronto also recently re-signed goalie Elaine Chuli and forward Claire Dalton after sustaining key losses during the expansion and free agency periods, including forwards Sarah Nurse, Hannah Miller and Julia Gosling.
