There is currently no indication that New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll will deviate from the plan to start veteran quarterback Russell Wilson this September, in part so that rookie Jaxson Dart can develop as a backup through at least a portion of the 2025 season.
While speaking with reporters at the Giants’ mandatory minicamp on Wednesday, Dart touched upon where he is on the depth chart at this stage of the offseason.
“I just trust them,” Dart said about his coaches, as shared by Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “They’ve had this blueprint and they’ve done it with different quarterbacks and you’ve seen them succeed at the highest level. So, I trust them. And for me, I’m just trying to be the most coachable player that I can. I want to play well in the offense. I want to be able to manage it and operate it at the highest level.”
Both Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen were with the Buffalo Bills when the Bills changed course and started Josh Allen in Week 2 of his rookie campaign. Allen earned Most Valuable Player Award honors for the 2024 season and is widely viewed as one of the best players at the position.
2019 first-round draft pick Daniel Jones guided the 2022 Giants to a playoff berth and to a road postseason win while playing under Daboll. Daboll and Co. benched and subsequently released Jones due to poor play this past November.
Daboll raised some eyebrows when he said on Tuesday that Dart was “excellent” throughout the spring as it pertains to “picking up the information” and being “aggressive with the football.” On Wednesday, Dart acknowledged that he feels he has “made tremendous strides” regarding his understanding of Daboll’s offense.
“Obviously, I’ve got to dive into a lot more,” Dart continued. “But, I’m definitely just trying to take it to the next level this summer, really just lock in, hone in on as much as I can throughout the time so that way, when I get back for training camp, I’m on an even better level than I am now.”
Dart could find himself one play away from appearing in New York’s regular-season opener versus the Washington Commanders on Sept. 7 if he’s able to leapfrog backup Jameis Winston on the depth chart before the preseason wraps up. The 25th overall pick of this year’s draft should see plenty of action when the Giants open the exhibition season with a matchup at the Bills on Aug. 9.
