Bruins hire Steve Spott as assistant coach

The Boston Bruins have another addition to new head coach Marco Sturm’s staff.

The team announced Friday that it has hired Steve Spott as an assistant coach.

Spott has spent the past 10 seasons as an assistant coach under Pete DeBoer with the San Jose Sharks, Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars.

“I’m incredibly excited and honoured to join the Boston Bruins organization,” Spott said in a release. “Being part of an Original Six franchise with such a proud history and tradition means a great deal to me and my family.

“The opportunity to work alongside Marco and the rest of this coaching staff, in front of one of the most passionate fan bases in hockey, is something I’m truly grateful for, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Spott began working with DeBoer in 1997 with the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers. They both left to join the Kitchener Rangers ahead of the 2002-03 season and helped the team capture the Memorial Cup that year. Spott became head coach of the Rangers in 2008 when DeBoer was hired by the Florida Panthers.

The 57-year-old Spott was head coach of the AHL’s Toronto Marlies and assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs for one season each before linking back up with DeBoer in 2015.

“I’m thrilled to add Steve Spott to our coaching staff, and also welcome him, his wife Lisa and their children, Tyler and Emma, to Boston.” Sturm said in the release. “Steve is a passionate teacher, a strong communicator, and brings great structure and detail to everything he does. His experience, especially on special teams, will be a major asset for our group and for the Bruins moving forward.”

Boston hired Sturm as head coach earlier this month. The team missed the playoffs this past season under interim head coach Joe Sacco, who took over after Jim Montgomery was fired in November.

Sturm’s staff also includes assistant coaches Jay Leach (ssistant Coach and Chris Kelly plus goaltending coach Bob Essensa.
