Will Falcons take flight back to the Super Bowl soon?

There’s a newfound energy in Flowery Branch, and it starts under center.

With second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr. officially taking the reins in Atlanta, the Falcons enter the 2025 season with real expectations and real firepower. Veteran Kirk Cousins, now backing up Penix on a sizable contract, appears comfortable in the mentor role, at least for now.

But this year, it’s the Penix show. And it’s hard not to get excited about what’s around him.

The “core four” of Penix Jr., Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts are expected to be full-go this fall, and if they stay healthy, this group has the potential to be one of the most dynamic young units in the NFL. Penix’s deep-ball accuracy and quick decision-making pair perfectly with London’s physicality, Pitts’ versatility and Bijan’s explosiveness in both the run and pass game.

This team isn’t just built for the future. It is built to win now.

After years of inconsistency and the lingering heartbreak of blowing a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LI, fans in Atlanta have reason to believe this is the year. A 12- or 13-win season isn’t just a goal, it’s an expectation. A playoff berth? All but certain. Home-field advantage? Within reach. And if we are being bold, which this Falcons team demands, there’s no reason not to mention the words Super Bowl appearance and Super Bowl champions.

The defense, often the Achilles heel of past Falcons teams, has quietly transformed into a fast, physical and well-coached unit. With smart offseason additions and growth from young playmakers, Atlanta may finally have a defense to match its offensive potential.

There is a different feeling around this team. It’s not just hope, but belief. And in a wide-open NFC South, belief might be all the Falcons need to finally take flight.
