Filipino-American Brooke Van Sickle, who stars for Petro Gazz in the PVL, is set to make her Alas Pilipinas debut in the VTV Women’s International Cup in Vietnam.

VIGAN, Ilocos Sur — Filipino-Americans Brooke Van Sickle, MJ Phillips, and Tia Andaya are finally set for their Philippine national team debut when Alas Pilipinas competes in the VTV Women’s International Cup from June 28 to July 5 in Vinh Phuc, Vietnam.

Alas Pilipinas coach Jorge Souza De Brito revealed the initial 17-woman roster bannered by the first-ever PVL Season MVP and Petro Gazz star Van Sickle.

The transfer of federation for Van Sickle, All-Filipino Finals MVP Phillips, and Choco Mucho rookie setter Andaya is still in the process, but all three can play in the invitational tournament.

“She was the MVP in our last PVL All-Filipino, but volleyball isn’t an individual sport. She’s adapting very well, just like MJ and Tia,” De Brito told the reporters, following his debut in the PVL on Tour on Saturday in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

Maddie Madayag is also returning to the national team for the first time since the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, joining Alas middles Fifi Sharma and Thea Gagate.

The Brazilian coach will also field newcomers and former La Salle stars Alleiah Malaluan, Leila Cruz, Mars Alba, Amie Provido, and Justine Jazareno.

De Brito will continue to rely on the core of captain Jia De Guzman, Dawn Macandili-Catindig, Eya Laure, Vanie Gandler, Dell Palomata, and reserve setter Lams Lamina, who all played crucial roles in Alas’ silver medal finish at the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Nations Cup.

Angel Canino, Bella Belen, Shaina Nitura, Alyssa Solomon, Cla Loresco, Julia Coronel, and Jen Nierva are sitting out in the tournament.

The final line-up will be composed of 14 players.

The team is flying to Vietnam on Thursday for their second tournament this year before the SEA V.League next month.

Alas battles its Nations Cup championship tormentor Vietnam, Australia, and Sichuan Wuliangchun of China in Pool A.
