After including Jonnu Smith in the Jalen Ramsey trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Miami Dolphins may not be done making moves. The AFC East team entered the offseason with several questions to answer, starting with Ramsey’s future.
The cornerback is out of town after they shipped him to Pittsburgh, alongside Smith, while receiving All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a pick swap. The veteran tight end played a single season in South Florida, taking the field in 17 games, catching 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns.
Mike McDaniel is now left with Julian Hill, Pharaoh Brown, Tanner Conner and Hayden Rucci in the tight end room. NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported on Monday that Smith’s exit opened the door for the Dolphins to try to land a new tight end.

“The #Dolphins are now in conversations with multiple teams about acquiring a tight end after sending Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh, per sources. A wild start to the holiday week could get wilder …”

While Pelissero doesn’t mention specific names, the Dolphins might have options to study before making an offer.
After an 8-9 record in the 2024 season, the Dolphins have something to prove. Tua Tagovailoa’s job might be in jeopardy following another concussion that kept him sidelined for several games last year.
Tyreek Hill’s future appears to be sorted at this moment, but another losing season could make the Super Bowl champion wide receiver try to go somewhere else.
With De’Von Achane, Jaylen Wright and Alexander Mattison as running backs, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine as wide receivers, the Dolphins have an intriguing offense. That said, they still want a tight end to complement those units.
3 potential tight end candidates for the Miami Dolphins
3. Grant Calcaterra, Philadelphia Eagles

Grant Calcaterra is the Philadelphia Eagles’ TE2 behind Dallas Goedert. His production went up last season, going from four receptions in 2023 to 24 in 2024. He racked up 298 yards and one touchdown for the Super Bowl LIX champions.
2. Tyler Conklin, LA Chargers

Miami knows Tyler Conklin very well, as he spent the last three seasons with the New York Jets. The veteran caught 51 passes for 449 yards and four touchdowns. He might not have much playing time with the Chargers, as Will Dissly appears to be the starter.
1. Kyle Pitts, Atlanta Falcons

This is the most ambitious and expensive candidate. Kyle Pitts’ tenure in Atlanta has gone from better to worse, recording 68 receptions in his rookie season to 47 in 2024. He still scored a career-high four touchdowns last year, but his usage has been a source of concern for the player.
