Avalanche sign Brent Burns to one-year deal

The 40-year-old defenceman signed with the Colorado Avalanche on a one-year deal, the team announced Wednesday.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Burns will earn a base of $1 million next season, with games-played bonuses that could net him another $3 million.

Burns spent the last three seasons in Carolina, playing all 246 regular-season contests and 41 playoff games. However, he produced only six goals and 23 assists last season – both his lowest totals since the shortened 2020-21 campaign.

The hulking right-shot blue-liner also holds the longest ironman streak among active players, skating in 925 consecutive games. He nearly broke the streak in the final game of the regular season against the Ottawa Senators, but wound up playing 24 seconds in the 7-5 loss.

He’s 139 games behind Phil Kessel’s record.

Over his career, Burns has 910 points (261 goals, 649 assists) over 1,497 games, while posting 24 goals and 56 assists in 135 playoff contests.
