Brisbane have scored four unanswered tries in the final 20 minutes to storm home and shock the second-placed Bulldogs.
It was a tale of two halves, with Canterbury in full control for the first 60 minutes of the game before the Broncos flicked the switch in an epic comeback to stun the favourites at home, surging to a 22-18 win.
It was a physical start to the game and Brisbane forward Brendan Piakura had to go for a HIA after getting his tackle wrong and ended up flopping to the ground after impact.
He passed his assessment, but the news didn’t get better for his side, with Adam Reynolds coming up with back-to-back blunders.
First, he put a kick out on the full before getting a touch on the ball during a Bulldogs pass, giving the opposition a new set of six.
From the scrum, a slick backline play allowed Marcelo Montoya to dive over in the corner and open the scoring.
But the halfback was not the only one making blunders. Selwyn Cobbo was recalled to the Brisbane side with Reece Walsh’s naming as the 18th man for State of Origin, but was having a first half to forget.
A costly and sloppy communication error with his teammate allowed Matt Burton to score a miracle try off his own kick and extend Canterbury’s lead.
Viliame Kikau made it three straight tries to his side, diving over to give his side a 16-0 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs’ pressure continued in the second half, with a Burton penalty the only score for the first 20 minutes of the half.
But then a poor pass from Lachie Galvin, who was playing five-eighth in a late positional change from the coach, allowed the Broncos to streak away downfield.
A few plays later Josiah Karapani scored off an Ezra Mam break, for their first score of the game.
It changed the momentum of the contest, Mam turning provider once again and Delouise Hoeter made it two tries in five minutes.
Billy Walters’ try with 10 minutes to go got his team to within four points, gave his team a sniff, before Piakura sealed the sensational come-from-behind win.
