Former Lakers Coach Lands New Job With Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks aren’t just improving their roster; they are improving their coaching staff, too.

Writing on X, Shams Charania reported that Frank Vogel is finalizing an agreement to join the Mavericks as a lead assistant coach under Jason Kidd.

This is a massive addition for the Mavericks and could greatly help the team as they attempt to start a new chapter in 2025-26.

Vogel is a championship coach, having led the Los Angeles Lakers to a title in 2020.

During that championship run, Kidd was an assistant under Vogel.

Their roles may have changed, but their working relationship will remain strong in 2025-26 and beyond.

Vogel is taking over for Sean Sweeney, who left his job with the Mavericks to join the San Antonio Spurs.

NBA fans last saw Vogel with the Phoenix Suns, when he went 49-33 for just one season before being let go.

His time with the Suns was not a highlight of his career, and he is ready to move on.

The Mavericks are also ready for a change.

They just got Cooper Flagg in the draft only months after losing Luka Doncic in a monster blockbuster trade.

With a new-look roster and revived hopes for the future, Dallas is looking to turn a corner and start something new.

Vogel could be a huge part of that process.

Throughout his career, Vogel has worked for the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, Indiana Pacers, and Orlando Magic before moving on to the Lakers and Suns.

What will he accomplish with the Mavericks?
