Another Bulldog leaving kennel with Mahoney following Sexton out the exit door to join NRL rivals

Canterbury’s spineshake-up has continued with hooker Reed Mahoney following Toby Sexton out the exit door after agreeing to join North Queensland next year.

Despite being under contract until the end of next year, Mahoney’s agent recently asked the club permission to explore options elsewhere and the Cowboys are in the market for a hooker with NSW representative Reece Robson joining the Roosters in 2026.

They tried to snare Tallyn Da Silva when he left the Wests Tigers mid-season but Parramatta won the race for his services.

According to a Fox Sports report, Mahoney told the Dogs that he would be heading north on a three-year deal after Friday night’s 22-18 loss to the Broncos.

Lachlan Galvin mid-season arrival from the Tigers had already resulted in Sexton signing with French side Catalans Dragons for 2026 earlier this week.

Galvin and Sexton played in the halves together on Friday with Matt Burton pushed out to centre but that plan backfired as the Dogs blew an 18-point lead to Brisbane.

Sexton was considered a chance to be fashioned into a hooker but with he and Mahoney depart the club, utility Bailey Hayward appears set to be Canterbury’s long-term dummy-half.

Mahoney, a fringe Maroons candidate, has played 165 matches at NRL level since his debut in 2018 with Parramatta, the last 64 of those with the Dogs since switching clubs three years ago.
